What you missed today
Good evening!
Today was a pretty bad day for everyone except for cheese makers and Disneyland execs.
You could make your (and our!) day even better by completing our Q2 survey here to be entered for a chance to win a $500 Amazon gift card.
Anyway, here are the 7 things you missed today:
1. 😮💨 Disneyland Avoided Employee Strike
When you wish upon a star (and answer union demands), dreams really do come true. Disneyland reached a tentative agreement with 14,000 workers yesterday, averting the possibility of its first employee strike in 40 years.
2. 💪 Tail GM’s Big Bet on Lithium Tech
People make bets because they’re confident in an edge.
With the world rapidly transitioning from gasoline to electric cars, GM placed a $50 million bet on EnergyX thanks to its undeniable edge in lithium extraction.
It takes 12-18 months to extract lithium using current methods, but EnergyX extracts 300% more lithium in just one to two days!
That’s why it acquired 90,000 acres of lithium-rich Chilean land and recently announced Project Lonestar, a commercial lithium plant on U.S. soil, supported by a $5 million DOE grant.
This has a pretty impressive potential payout, too. Lithium demand is expected to increase 20x by 2040.
3. 🙃 Nasdaq & S&P 500 Had Worst Day Since 2022
Tech continues to disappoint this week, with lackluster earnings reports from Tesla and Alphabet, leading to a selloff of tech shares. The Nasdaq declined 3.6%, and the S&P 500 fell 2.3%, both logging their worst daily percentage declines since 2022. The Dow also dropped by 1.3%, or 504 points.

5. 🏚️ Conn’s HomePlus Filed For Bankruptcy
Conn’s HomePlus, a 134-year-old retailer with locations primarily in the southern United States, has filed for bankruptcy and is planning to close nearly half of its 170 stores. Bad news for Florida, which is the most affected state, with 18 stores closing soon.
6. 💨 Retailers Struggle With Shipping Speeds
Thanks to Amazon popularizing same-day shipping, many retailers are having trouble managing transportation costs. A new study from consulting firm AlixPartners found that for 85% of retail execs, reducing total cost per order is the top priority for last-mile delivery.
7. 🧀 Cheese is Carrying the Dairy Industry
While consumers worldwide may be reducing their overall consumption of animal-based products, people can’t quit cheese. The cheese-snack business is projected to reach $75.1 billion in global sales this year, according to new reports. Sounds like a gouda time to brie in the cheese biz.
Bonus. CEO Tip Of The Day
I’ve got TWO bonus tips for you today… here’s what you probably shouldn’t do as a CEO:
One, maybe don’t run off to the Olympics while your company is struggling from a major disruption affecting customers worldwide.
Two, maybe don’t apologize to your partners for the worst thing you could’ve ever done by giving them a $10 Uber Eats gift card.
