Meta rolled out a new, standalone generative AI experience on the web, helping users create images by describing them in natural language. “Imagine with Meta” takes on competitors DALL-E & Midjourney. Read more here.

2. 💸 Minimum Wage Is Increasing

Starting in the new year, anyone working a minimum wage job will be paid more in 22 states. In seven states, including Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and DC, workers will have minimum wages of $15 or more. Read more here.

3. 🤖 Google Launches GPT-4 Competitor

Gemini, Google’s new AI model, beats GPT-4 in “30 of the 32 widely used academic benchmarks in large language model research and development.” Users can experience it in Google’s Bard chatbot. Read more here.

4. 💴 China Aims To Phase Out Dollars

But it’s not going so well. The effort to de-dollarize in exchange for the use of yuan in global trade is running into some obstacles, namely limited supply of yuan and high-use of the dollar in cross-border payments. Read more here.

5. 🛒 Self-Checkout Is A Shoplifter’s Dream

According to a recent analysis from Grabango, shoplifters are 21 times more likely to steal from self-checkout than from checkout lanes operated by a human cashier, representing 3.5% of revenue loss. Yikes. Read more here.
