It’s gonna be a good new year for OpenAI. Japanese firm SoftBank has completed its $40 billion investment commitment in the ChatGPT maker at a $260 billion pre-money valuation. The investment takes SoftBank’s stake in the company above 10%. (CNBC)

5. 👀 Nvidia Might Buy AI21 Labs for $3Bn
Nvidia continues to make headlines. The chipmaker is reportedly in advanced talks to buy Israel-based AI startup AI21 Labs for as much as $3 billion. A 2023 funding round valued AI21 at $1.4 billion, a round that included Nvidia and Alphabet’s Google. (Reuters)
6. 🇨🇳 China is Implementing a 50% Domestic Equipment Mandate for Chipmakers
As Beijing pushes to build a self-sufficient semiconductor supply chain, China is requiring chipmakers to use at least 50% domestically made equipment for adding new capacity. While the rule isn’t publicly documented, chipmakers have been told they must prove at least half of their equipment will be Chinese-made to get state approval. (Reuters)
7. 💹 AI Firm MiniMax is Targeting a $539M Hong Kong IPO
Chinese AI startup MiniMax Group is seeking to raise up to HK$4.19 billion ($538.54 million) in a Hong Kong initial public offering. The AI firm had an overall valuation of $4 billion in July and is among the first batch of Chinese AI companies to seek a public listing. (Reuters)
