Turns out Uber decided seven layers of management was about four too many. The ridesharing giant is cutting roughly 3,300 jobs, 10% of global headcount, shrinking its manager ranks by 20% and halving teams that had only one or two members. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's internal email blamed complexity from years of growth. Remote work is going away too, for all but 1% of staff. (TechCrunch)

3. ⚖️ Google Beat the DOJ's Bid to Break Up its Ad Tech Business

The DOJ has now tried twice to break up Google, and Google is two for two. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema rejected the Justice Department's request to force a divestiture of AdX, the company's advertising exchange, in Wednesday's ruling out of Alexandria, Virginia. That makes it the government's second straight loss in its campaign to split up the search giant. (Quartz)

5. 💸 X is Routing US Creator Payouts Through X Money Instead of Stripe

X would very much like you to open an X Money account, and it is no longer asking. Starting Wednesday, all U.S. payouts from Elon Musk's platform, both Original Content Rewards and subscriptions, run through X Money instead of Stripe. The upside is instant access, with no two-week cycle and no $30 minimum. The downside is there is reportedly no opt-out. Creators outside the U.S. stay on Stripe. (TechCrunch)

6. 🗺️ MapQuest Went to No. 1 in the US After Refusing to Rename a Lake

MapQuest, a company many people assumed had quietly died sometime around 2009, is now the top free app in America. After an August 27 executive order directed U.S. mapping services to call Lake Ontario 'Lake America,' MapQuest said no. Google Maps and Apple Maps complied. Sensor Tower counted roughly 632,000 downloads since, and MapQuest says it has actually seen over 1.5 million installs. (TechCrunch)

7. 🛋️ Southwest is Opening its First Airport Lounges With Chase

Southwest spent decades selling you free bags and a boarding scramble, and now it wants to sell you a quiet room. The airline is opening its first-ever airport lounges in Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville, with at least seven more locations planned. It is partnering with Chase, building on the bank's Sapphire Reserve lounge network. (CNBC)
