Good Morning!

September is officially in full swing. Anyone else already planning their Q4?

What You Missed This Week:

1. 🕷️ OpenAI's Astra is the First Model to Cross its 'Critical' Cyber Threshold

Turns out OpenAI built something that picks locks. The lab says its forthcoming Astra model is the first to meet its “critical cybersecurity threshold,” meaning it can find unknown flaws in computer systems and exploit them with no human guidance. Astra reportedly aced ExploitBench and dug up two zero-days on a tougher in-house version. Access to those capabilities will stay limited at launch... (TechCrunch)

3. 🛒 The FTC is Suing Amazon For $20Bn Over Secret Ad Surcharges

Turns out the FTC reads the fine print on Amazon's ad auctions. It sued the company this week alongside 22 state attorneys general, alleging Amazon quietly slipped a “soft reserve price” surcharge into its own ad auctions starting in 2019, inflating advertiser costs by roughly 50% in peak season. Regulators want $20 billion. Amazon calls the suit “misguided”... it settled a separate FTC case for $2.5 billion last September. (Quartz)

4. 🚕 Feds Opened a Cybercab Probe Hours After Tesla Put it on the Road

Tesla spent two years teasing a car with no steering wheel, and regulators needed about three hours to start asking questions. NHTSA opened an investigation into the process and technical data Tesla leaned on to self-certify the Cybercab against federal motor vehicle safety standards... the ones that still require manual controls. The first production Cybercabs began carrying passengers in Austin the same day. (TechCrunch)

6. 🚗 Uber is Laying Off 3,300 People, 10% of its Global Staff

Turns out Uber decided seven layers of management was about four too many. The ridesharing giant is cutting roughly 3,300 jobs, 10% of global headcount, shrinking its manager ranks by 20% and halving teams that had only one or two members. First a Cybercab hits Austin, now the incumbent trims down. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's internal email blamed complexity from years of growth. Remote work is going away too, for all but 1% of staff.
