1. ✂️ Microsoft Cut Nearly 5,000 Employees
It’s a tough return to work this Monday for many Microsoft employees. The tech giant just cut 2.1% of its global workforce (around 4,800 roles). The layoffs hit Xbox and commercial sales the hardest, with 1,600 of those roles coming from Xbox staff. Microsoft’s EVP and CPO stressed that the roles “are not being replaced by AI” but didn’t go so far as to say they weren’t inspired by AI changes. (TechCrunch)

3. 🚫 Alibaba is Banning Employees From Using Anthropic’s Claude Code
Due to security concerns, Chinese tech giant Alibaba has told employees to stop using Anthropic’s popular Claude Code tool. According to reports, hidden code in the software could track if a user was in China or linked to a Chinese AI lab. Starting July 10, employees must use Alibaba’s own coding platform, Qoder. (Quartz)

5. 🏦 Klarna Applied to Establish a U.S. Bank
Buy now, pay later pioneer Klarna is hoping to charter now, benefit later. The Swedish fintech company has applied to establish an FDIC-insured U.S. bank in Utah, which would allow it to operate its own American banking subsidiary if approved. A bank charter would let Klarna fund loans, expand banking products, and bring more of its payments in-house rather than rely on third-party banking partners. (CNBC)
6. 🌅 Amazon’s Not Accepting New Customers For Mechanical Turk
Amazon’s Mechanical Turk is, reportedly, on life support. An announcement on the crowdsourcing service’s website says that on July 30, the service will close to new customers. According to Amazon Web Services, “existing customers can continue to use the service as normal… but we do not plan to introduce new features.” (TechCrunch)

7. 💊 Novartis is Buying a U.K. Cancer Drug Startup For Up to $1.5Bn
Novartis is acquiring Myricx Bio, a privately held U.K. biotechnology company, for up to $1.5 billion including $1.1 billion at signing with an additional $400 million tied to future milestones. The acquisition adds a new class of antibody drugs to treat cancers that have developed resistance to existing therapies. Assuming it gets regulatory sign-off, the deal is expected to close sometime this summer. (Quartz)
