Good evening!
I hope at least someone has asked you “are you today’s date?” today.
Here are the 7 things you missed today:
1. 🔄 Google reverses AI health tool opt-in tied to benefits after backlash
After staff complaints, Google clarified employees can opt out of sharing data with the third-party AI benefits tool Nayya and still remain eligible for coverage. Earlier internal guidance had said employees needed to grant access or risk losing benefits in the new cycle. For those who do opt in, shared fields can include pay, gender and Social Security number, per the updated guidance. Google said the original HR-site language did not reflect its intent and has been fixed. (Business Insider)

3. 👀 Major U.S. retailers pull “millions” of prohibited Chinese electronics
Following FCC oversight, major U.S. online retail sites removed millions of listings for electronics on the agency’s Covered List or lacking authorization. Items included Huawei and ZTE devices, per Chair Brendan Carr. Retailers are also putting new processes in place to prevent re-listings. On Oct 29th, the FCC plans vote to tighten authorizations and potentially ban some previously authorized Covered List devices from sale. The move continues a multi-year crackdown on Chinese telecom gear. (Reuters)

5. 🔕 Chrome will auto-disable notifications from sites you don’t use
On Android and desktop, Chrome will automatically revoke notification permissions for sites you haven’t interacted with recently. Google says less than 1% of notifications get any user interaction, and users will be notified when Chrome unsubscribes them. Users will have the option to reverse it or turn auto-revocation off. The change extends Safety Check behaviors that already revoke camera/location access for dormant sites. Google adds it didn’t see a meaningful drop in notification clicks during tests. (Tech Crunch)
6. 🔓 Discord says breach at vendor exposed data of at least 70,000 users
Per the company, a third-party vendor used for age-appeal reviews was hacked, potentially exposing government ID photos and IP addresses for ~70,000 users. Reporting by 404 Media cited hackers’ claims of 1.5 TB stolen; Discord told The Verge those claims are incorrect and part of an extortion attempt. Affected users have been notified. The incident comes amid broader debates around age-verification data risks. (Tech Crunch)
7. 📉 Wall Street sinks as new China tariffs surface
Markets tumbled Friday after President Trump warned of a “massive” tariff hike on Chinese goods in response to a rare-ear ths dispute. The selloff deepened across tech and chip stocks, sending the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to their steepest drops since April. Chinese companies like Alibaba, JD.com Inc, and PDD also slumped, while the VIX volatility index spiked to a four-month high. Trading sentiment was further hit by the ongoing U.S. data blackout tied to the government shutdown. (Reuters)
